Stop & Shop to Bow LEED-certified Store

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. LLC will open an energy-efficient store in Wayland, Mass., on Nov. 16, its first in the Wayland-Sudbury area.

The 45,000-square-foot store will be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified.  Stop & Shop will introduce complementary electric car charging stations at the Wayland store, providing nine parking spots for electric cars.

The store incorporates many green features. More than 600 roof-top solar panels are expected to supply about 11 percent of the store’s overall energy needs. LED parking lot lights will reduce energy consumption and will save about 1.4 percent of the store’s annual electricity requirements. The building has a white roof to reflect the sun light and has skylights to reduce the electricity consumption. Plus, the fluorescent lights and electronically commutated motors in the refrigerated areas are energy-efficient.

Reflecting the community’s dedication to sustainable and healthy living, the store will also offer fresh produce, natural and organic foods, a full-service meat department, and Stop & Shop Own Brands items.  Stop & Shop’s Healthy Ideas shelf labeling will help shoppers identify healthy foods and features tags that highlight gluten-free products to help shoppers find products to meet their dietary needs.

“We feel confident that with the store’s energy-efficient features and full complement of services, this new Wayland Stop & Shop will serve the region well,” said Joe Kelley, president, Stop & Shop New England Division. “We look forward to forging lasting relationships with our new customers and supporting the area in fighting hunger, promoting healthy families and protecting the local environment.”

Customers will be able to scan, tally and receive personalized savings while they shop via their smart phones. The SCAN IT! Mobile app is available to iPhone and most Android users. Customers can use the ORDER IT! deli kiosk to order deli items in-store then pick them up at their convenience. Alerts are announced in-store or customers can receive texts on their phone.

The Wayland Stop & Shop, located at 400 Boston Post Rd., will employ approximately 135 people.

The Ahold-owned supermarket operator has received LEED certification for 50 of its 400 stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, New York, and New Jersey.  Stop & Shop is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and EPA’s Smart Way program.
