Stew Leonard’s Once More Gets Physical – This Time in Yonkers
As part of its continuing commitment to preventive health care, Stew Leonard’s last week began providing on-site physicals for employees at its Yonkers, N.Y., store. On Aug. 2, 24 associates received examinations from a team with Huntington, N.Y.-based Inter State Diagnostic, Inc., a mobile medical unit that brings medical services directly to businesses, in a conference room above the store.
“Stew Leonard’s surveyed our Team Members, and we found that a lack of time and not having a trusted doctor locally kept many from getting their yearly physicals,” explained Jill Leonard Tavello, EVP of culture and communications at Norwalk, Conn.-based Stew Leonard’s. “By bringing the doctors and nurses from Inter State Diagnostic directly to our store in Yonkers, we hope to keep our Team Members healthy and reinforce the importance of preventive care.”
In addition to Inter State Diagnostic’s doctors and nurses, who provided privacy screens and all necessary medical equipment, as well as meeting with each employee to answer health care-related questions, a translator for Stew Leonard’s Spanish-speaking employees was available.
Stew Leonard’s preventive health care measures for its more than 2,500 employees also include on-site cholesterol and blood pressure screenings, mammograms, and flu shots offered throughout the year; discounts on weight-loss programs, smoking cessation aids, and fitness center memberships provided to full- and part-time workers; and up to $500 in Benefit Bucks -- or money toward associates’ deductible – through Aug. 31 to encourage associates to visit their doctors for an annual physical.
The grocer introduced the on-site physical program in early June at its flagship Norwalk store. The next date for Yonkers physicals is Aug. 16 from 4 p.m. to 8p.m., Stew Leonard’s spokeswoman Meghan Bell told PG, adding that no dates were scheduled yet for the company’s other stores.
As well as its Norwalk and Yonkers stores, family-owned Stew Leonard’s operates locations in Danbury and Newington, Conn.
