Stew Leonard's Goes Green with Ice Cream

Stew Leonard's today is giving free ice cream to customers who use at least one reusable bag.

Although the Norwalk, Conn.-based grocer provides its own reusable bags at checkout, it said it will also reward customers using reusable bags from any other store.

To help encourage its shoppers to adopt earth-friendly habits, the grocer has fact sheets at the cash registers explaining why reusable bags are better for the environment than either plastic or paper.

Stew Loenard's said cashiers will mark checkout receipts, which shoppers can then take to the ice cream counter to get their free ice cream, which must be redeemed on the same day.

Stew Leonard's operates four stores in Norwalk, Danbury, and Newington, Conn., and Yonkers, N.Y.
