Starbucks to Add Fresh Salads to 4,400 Stores

SEATTLE -- Coffee house mega chain Starbucks Corp. said last week it plans to add fresh salads at about 4,400 of its company-operated U.S. stores beginning at the end of the month, in an effort to boost food sales and offer its customers more lunch options.

In some markets, the salads will replace Jones Soda in the cold case, which will no longer be carried at Starbucks by the end of the month.

The company said it would sell tomato mozzarella insalata and Southwest chicken salads in 22 markets where it currently offers lunch. The salads will cost $5 to $6 each.

Stores also will add up to three more salads based on regional consumer preferences, according to published reports. In Seattle, for example, stores will carry white chicken curry with couscous, albacore tuna penne, and Asian sesame noodle salads.

Starbucks' stores that offer lunch generate on average an additional $30,000 in sales per store per year, according to a spokeswoman quoted in a report by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

The company has nearly 10,000 U.S. stores, with about two-thirds of those being company operated. The rest are licensed stores that are in supermarkets and other locations.
