Staples Chairman/CEO Joins Kroger Board
CINCINNATI -- Ronald L. Sargent, chairman and c.e.o. of Staples, Inc., has joined the board of directors of The Kroger Co. here. Sargent was elected to serve until Kroger's annual shareholders meeting in June 2007, at which time he will stand for election by the shareholders. With Sargent's election, the Kroger board now has 15 members.
Prior to joining Staples, Sargent spent 10 years with Kroger in various positions. He joined Staples as v.p. of operations in 1989, and held roles of increasing responsibility during his career with the office products company, including president of North America operations and president and c.o.o.
In addition to serving as a director of Staples, Sargent is also a director of Aramark Corp., Mattel, Inc. and The Yankee Candle Co.
In other news, Kroger has signed on bilingual entertainment paper, Que Pasa en Tennessee, to be distributed through its Tennessee area stores. Latin Market Communications launched the publication last September. The color-tabloid format paper is a quarter-fold with two front covers that mirror each other - one in English (What's on in Tennessee?) and one in Spanish (Que Pasa en Tennessee?).
In addition to Kroger stores, the paper is also distributed to schools, Hispanic churches and Latino serving businesses.
