Spartan Stores Posts Record-Setting United Way Campaign Results

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Spartan Stores and its employees achieved a record-setting United Way campaign of $420,000 this year. "Our associates demonstrate their compassion for caring for our communities every day," said Craig Sturken, Spartan's chairman, president and c.e.o. "I'm proud that their commitment to the United Way will help ensure essential human services resources are available for our community's children, adults, and seniors."

For its United Way drive, Spartan Stores matches 25 percent of every contribution its employees make to the campaign. "By sharing our success with our customers and the communities we serve, Spartan is making an investment in a better future and a better quality of life for all individuals," noted Sturken.

Robert Haight, president of Heart of West Michigan United Way, said: "We are so fortunate to enjoy the leadership of Spartan Stores in our community. In addition to coordinating and implementing a campaign based upon nationally recognized best practices, Spartan Stores provides essential leadership on our campaign cabinet, kickoff event, and campaign coordinators group."

With warehouse facilities in Grand Rapids and Plymouth, Mich., Spartan supplies more than 350 independent grocery stores in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. Spartan Stores also owns and operates 68 retail supermarkets and 19 deep-discount food and drug stores in Michigan and Ohio, including D&W Fresh Markets, Family Fare Supermarkets, Glen's Markets, and The Pharm.
