Spartan Stores Marks Earth Day with Eco-Conscious Focus

In doing its part to give Mother Earth a helping hand, Spartan Stores has joined with vendor partners Fresh Express, Green Forest Products, and Planet Brand to sponsor a total of 4,500 trees to be planted in Michigan's Huron/Manistee Forests.

"Earth Day is intended to create awareness of and appreciation for the earth's environment," said Jeanne Norcross, Spartan Stores' v.p./corporate affairs. "By planting trees for our future, we will be improving air quality, absorbing sound, reducing noise pollution, reducing runoff and erosion, saving energy and improving lives."

Spartan Stores also actively supports a green environment and has an ongoing commitment to adopt smart environmental practices, utilize energy-saving construction standards, and maintain recycling efforts, Norcross added.

To involve the youngest generation of shoppers in Earth Day awareness, Family Fare, Felpausch, Glen's Markets, and D&W Fresh Market locations will host an earth-friendly Kids' Day event on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Spartan Stores' total environmental efforts include everything from offering recyclable fabric shopping bags to shoppers to installing an ongoing energy reduction program throughout the company with a commitment to lower energy consumption by 15 percent by 2009.

In addition to distributing more than 40,000 private-label and national brand products to nearly 400 independent grocery stores in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio, Spartan Stores also owns and operates 86 retail supermarkets and 14 deep-discount food and drug stores in Michigan and Ohio, including Family Fare Supermarkets, Glen's Markets, D&W Fresh Markets, Felpausch Food Centers, and The Pharm.
