Spartan Stores, Local Habitat for Humanity Chapter Receive Top Sponsor, Affiliate Awards

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Habitat for Humanity of Michigan this week will honor Spartan Stores as its 2007 Sponsor of the Year.

In 2006, Spartan and Habitat for Humanity of Kent County collaborated to launch the first-ever scanning program in D&W Fresh Markets and Family Fare Supermarkets throughout greater Grand Rapids and Holland, Mich. The month-long program, which raised enough money to build a Habitat for Humanity of Kent County home, brought Spartan employees to the forefront in a variety of vital volunteer capacities.

Buoyed by the success of the initial campaign, Spartan Stores built a second home, and in March of last year revealed plans to expand the program statewide in 2008. The current campaign runs February 1-March 5, 2008 in Spartan Stores throughout Michigan, including D&W Fresh Markets, Family Fare Supermarkets, Felpausch and Glen's Markets.

"We recognize the importance of corporate leadership, fully understanding the power of smaller contributions from generous individuals," said Craig Sturken, Spartan's chairman and c.e.o. "Our financial backing - along with our Spartan employees volunteering on the job site - can build not only homes - but hope - for Habitat homebuyers. This temporary boost - along with their zero percent interest mortgages - is what makes dreams come true."
