Spartan Stores Creates WMU/Craig Sturken Scholarship

Spartan Stores, Inc. has created a food marketing scholarship in the name of its executive chairman, Craig Sturken, to benefit Western Michigan University students. The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based distributor will fund the scholarship for the Kalamazoo, Mich., university.

Sturken, who began his career 50 years ago when he took his first job with a grocer at the age 16, is credited with turning around Spartan Stores, which owns Family Fare, D&W Fresh Markets and Glen’s stores, and runs warehouse facilities in Grand Rapids and Plymouth, Mich.

News of the Sturken scholarship was revealed at last week’s Food Marketing Conference at WMU, where Sturken has been a frequent visitor over the years.

"I never thought that beginning would end as CEO or chairman," Sturken was quoted as saying in local reports following the conference. "[But] if you dedicate yourself and have respect for people, you can go anywhere you want."
