Spartan Said Planning 2-Story Upscale D&W Unit in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS - Backed by an $8 million purse, Spartan Stores Inc. reportedly will build a 40,000-square-foot, two-story D&W Fresh Market flagship store here along the part of Michigan St. that's known as the "Medical Mile."

The new store will replace a Duthler's Foods at Michigan and Fuller Ave. NE, which will relocate to Spartan's Family Fare store at Madison Ave. and Hall St. SE, according to press reports.

"There is a tremendous need for an upscale store," Craig Sturken, Spartan's chairman and c.e.o. was quoted as saying. "We are going to have thousands of people on Medical Mile who will want to live near where they work. We want to be there when it happens."

Pending approval from the city, Spartan plans to begin redeveloping the Michigan site -- which opened as a Meijer store in 1952 -- in the spring. Construction is expected to take a year or longer.
