Spartan Dedicates 'Habitat' House; Expands Commitment

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Employees of Spartan Stores here joined this week with board members, city leaders, and Habitat for Humanity employeesto dedicate a newly constructed home in southwest Grand Rapids for a local family in need.

The dedication event capped eight months of efforts by Spartan employees to build a home for the Barrera family in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Kent County. Spartan c.e.o. Craig Sturken said the company will now expand its partnership with Habitat statewide.

"We recognize the importance of corporate leadership, fully understanding the power of smaller contributions from generous individuals," said Sturken. "Our financial backing - along with our Spartan employees volunteering on the job site - can build not only homes - but hope - for Habitat homebuyers. This temporary boost - along with their zero percent interest mortgages - is what makes dreams come true."

Spartan raised the necessary funds to build a Habitat house through a month-long scanning program in its D&W Fresh Markets and Family Fare Supermarkets throughout Grand Rapids and Holland. Spartan associates then stepped up, volunteering hundreds of hours to build the home.

In August of this year, Spartan Stores will launch a statewide scanning program to raise money for Habitat for Humanity affiliates throughout Michigan. Habitat for Humanity of Kent County - who pioneered the first Habitat/Spartan scanning program last August - will provide local support and serve as a liaison to Habitat Michigan in Lansing.

"On behalf of Habitat for Humanity of Kent County and All Michigan Habitat affiliates, we wish to thank Spartan Stores for its key role in providing energy to build more affordable housing in the state of Michigan and for shinning a light on the need of hardworking people who seek simple, decent, housing for their families," said Pam Doty-Nation, Habitat for Humanity/Kent County's executive director. "Spartan employees' volunteer support and the generosity of Spartan shoppers will make a tremendous impact throughout our state and we are most grateful to have such a partner headquartered in our community."

With warehouse facilities in Grand Rapids and Plymouth, Mich., Spartan Stores serves over 350 independent grocery stores in Michigan and also owns and operates 68 retail supermarkets and 19 deep-discount food and drug stores in Michigan and Ohio, including Family Fare Supermarkets, Glen's Markets, D&W Fresh Markets and The Pharm.
