Spartan Banners Pack ’em in With Fat Tuesday Paczkis
Spartan Stores’ D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare, Felpausch, Glen’s and VG’s banners throughout Michigan helped customers commemorate Fat Tuesday with paczkis — yeast-raised fried and filled dough pockets that are coated with granulated sugar or a sweet glaze.
Pronounced “poonch-key and meaning “little package” in Polish, the paczki was in the spotlight in many of Spartan’s in-store bakeries in recent days, with contests and local entertainment offered to play up Fat Tuesday sales. Traditional fillings include prune or apricot, as well as raspberry, lemon and Bavarian cream.
Originating in Poland as a part of the feasting and celebration that ends on “Paczki Day,” or “Fat Tuesday,” the doughnut-type treat traditionally provided people with a way to use remaining eggs and fat that were couldn’t be eaten during the Lenten season, which gets underway today, Ash Wednesday. The rich pastries were considered to be the last indulgence until Easter.
