Southern Family Markets to Exit Tennessee

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In its latest consolidation of operations, Southern Family Markets, an affiliate of Keene, N.H-based C&S Wholesale Grocers based here, is preparing to exit Tennessee.

The regional retailer, which is already exiting North Carolina and has sold or closed stores in other under-performing markets, is now preparing to close all seven of its stores in Tennessee, C&S spokeswoman Karen Adelman confirmed yesterday.

In September the company said it would cut 66 jobs and sell the building housing its corporate offices as a result of its decision to close or sell 38 stores in the Southeast.

In addition to the 17 units in North Carolina it is closing or selling, Southern Family Markets has also closed 13 supermarkets in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi to streamline operations.

In 2005, Southern Family Markets acquired 104 stores from Bi-Lo.
