Southern Family Markets Cuts HQ Jobs
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Following its decision to close or sell 38 stores in the Southeast, supermarket chain Southern Family Markets here is cutting 66 jobs and plans to sell the building housing its corporate offices, according to published reports.
C.o.o. Bill White said the company needed to reduce office staff after making the decision to get rid of the under-performing stores. The layoffs will help protect the remaining 75 or so corporate positions, he noted.
With the consolidated staff, Southern Family Markets no longer needs an entire building for its headquarters, White said. The company is looking to sell the building and lease some space from the new owner for its corporate office.
C&S still operates the distribution center it acquired from Bi-Lo, and has no plans to sell it, White said.
Southern Family Markets was created when Keene, N.H.-based C&S Wholesale Grocers bought 104 stores from Mauldin, S.C.-based Bi-Lo LLC last year.
