Sobeys' Food Bank Campaign Yields More than CAN $104K

STELLARTON, N.S. -- Sobeys, Inc., based here, said yesterday that its fifth annual campaign to help food banks in the Atlantic Canada region had raised customer contributions of over CAN $104,000 (US $89,330).

From Nov. 21 to Dec. 10, an in-store program at Sobeys and Price Chopper stores throughout the region allowed shoppers to add CAN $2 or $5 (US $1.70 or $4.30) to their grocery order, with all proceeds going to area food banks.

Money raised through the customer donation program is given to provincial food bank associations for distribution to member food banks in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland.

"Our employees are very committed to the communities they serve, and on their behalf I want to sincerely thank our customers for their generosity," said Michael Scott, president operations for Sobeys' Atlantic region. "Food banks meet a critical need."

Since the inception of the program, almost CAN $350,000 (US $300,690) given by Sobeys and Price Chopper shoppers has been donated to the region's food banks.

Sobeys owns or franchises more than 1,300 stores in all 10 Canadian provinces under such banners as Sobeys, IGA extra, IGA, and Price Chopper.
