Sobeys, Atlantic Superstore Take Sunday Shopping Issue to Court

HALIFAX, N.S. -- Sobeys and Atlantic Superstore went to Nova Scotia Supreme Court here yesterday, to challenge the Canadian province's bid to stop more retailers from opening for business on Sundays, according to published reports.

Both supermarket operators maintain that the provincial government has overstepped its bounds with new shopping regulations forbidding retailers from subdividing their stores into smaller units, thereby circumventing the original law, which permits stores under 4,000 square feet of retail space to open on Sundays.

Sobeys initiated the lawsuit, while Atlantic Superstore has intervener status.
