Sobeys, Air Miles Reward Program Raising Funds for Kids Help Phone

HALIFAX, N.S. -- "Canadian Idol" contestant Chad Doucette and representatives from the Air Miles Reward Program, which bills itself as "Canada's premier coalition loyalty program," joined store staff at the Clayton Park, N.S. Sobeys store this weekend to launch a weeklong fundraising campaign for Kids Help Phone.

From Jan. 20 to Jan. 26, Sobeys and Air Miles are permitting shoppers across Atlantic Canada to add a $2 donation to their grocery order in to help the organization, which counsels Canadian children in need through phone and online services. For their contribution, all Air Miles Collectors will get five bonus Air Miles reward miles.

To draw attention to the campaign, national celebrity Doucette, who finished fourth in season four of "Canadian Idol," spent the morning at the store signing autographs, chatting with customers, and even bagging groceries.

"We know how important it is to ensure Kids Help Phone continues to 'be there for kids'," said Jason Potter, president operations for Sobeys Atlantic, in a statement.

"As a national sponsor of Kids Help Phone, the Air Miles Reward Program is committed to helping raise awareness and funds so that Kids Help Phone can continue to help kids navigate issues like bullying, low self-esteem, relationships, depression, and more," noted Air Miles Reward Program s.v.p. Caroline Papadatos. "We are asking Collectors to join us and our partners at Sobeys to Help Us Help Kids and make a difference in the community."

More than 9 million active Collector accounts, representing about two-thirds of all Canadian households, actively participate in the Air Miles Reward Program, which allows consumers to redeem Air Miles reward miles for movie passes, family attractions, electronic merchandise, sports and recreation, travel, and more.

Kids Help Phone is Canada's only toll-free, 24-hour, bilingual, and anonymous phone and web counseling, referral and information service for children and youth.

Sobeys owns or franchises more than 1,300 stores in all 10 Canadian provinces under retail banners including Sobeys, IGA, Foodland and Price Chopper food stores, and Lawtons Drug Stores.
