Six Bi-Lo Stores Earn Energy Star Rating

MAULDIN, S.C. -- Six Bi-Lo stores have received the Energy Star rating for 2006 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in recognition of the retailer's commitment to energy conservation and its cost-saving efforts in that regard. The locations are among the top 25 percent in the country in terms of energy performance, according to Bi-Lo.

One key factor in receiving an Energy Star rating is store design, the chain said. "These stores are designed to be energy-efficient," noted Bi-Lo v.p. of construction and maintenance Larry Zitzke in a statement. "They have features such as a white membrane roof to reflect heat, energy-efficient refrigeration systems, the latest florescent lighting technologies, and a system to reclaim waste heat from compressors to heat the store and pre-heat water."

Four of the stores that received the Energy Star rating are in South Carolina's Greenville County: two in the city of Greenville, and the others in Mauldin and Simpsonville. The remaining two locations are in Waynesville, N.C. and Clemson, S.C.

"It is vital for BI-LO to play our part in protecting the environment, and it is also very important for us to evaluate energy efficiencies and look for the most cost-effective way to run our business," added Zitzke.

Bi-Lo operates almost 230 supermarkets in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee.
