ShopRites Now Accepting MasterCard PayPass
ELIZABETH, N.J. -- Wakefern Food Corp., the merchandising and distribution arm of ShopRite supermarkets, and MasterCard Worldwide said yesterday that all 230 stores operating under the banners of ShopRite and PriceRite (a wholly owned subsidiary of Wakefern) in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island have begun accepting the contactless payment solution MasterCard PayPass.
Wakefern and MasterCard Worldwide, based in Purchase, N.Y., said the project is the largest deployment of PayPass in supermarkets to date. A MasterCard Worldwide spokesman told Progressive Grocer that other recent rollouts of the solution were to 87 Spartan Stores in January; and to 171 Meijer locations in August 2005, which was the first such deployment.
"At ShopRite we strive to provide our consumers with a quick and convenient shopping experience," said Wakefern director of corporate communications Karen Meleta in a statement. "We understand our customers lead very busy lives, and believe the implementation of MasterCard PayPass will help us cater to their lifestyle."

PayPass users tap their PayPass-enabled card or device on the PayPass reader to pay for items. Purchases under $25 don't require the customer to sign the receipt.
ShopRite said it still accepts traditional magnetic-stripe payment cards.
There are currently almost 13 million PayPass cards and devices in use, and the solution is accepted at 46,000 merchant locations worldwide, among them participating 7-Elevens, CVS drug stores, McDonald’s, and Regal Entertainment Group theaters.
