ShopRite Planning Big Brooklyn, N.Y., Supermarket

ShopRite has signed a lease for a 90,000-square-foot site at Gateway Center Phase II, a suburban-style mixed-use retail project in Brooklyn, N.Y. The store, slated to open in autumn 2014, will be the banner’s largest supermarket in the Tri-State region of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, bringing about 300 full- and part-time jobs to the community.

Alex Arancio, senior real estate representative with Keasbey, N.J.-based Wakefern Food Corp., the retail cooperative whose members operate ShopRite stores, worked with Peter Ripka of RIPCO Real Estate in New York; Glenn Goldstein, president of Related Retail in New York; and John Hanlon, SVP of CBRE in New York, on the long-term lease deal.

Operated by an affiliate of co-op member Glass Gardens, the ShopRite at Gateway Center will carry a wide selection of groceries, fresh produce, baked goods, daily delivered meat and seafood, a floral department, pharmacy, and ethnic foods, including Japanese and Chinese specialties for dine in or takeout, as well as a sushi bar and a full-service catering team.

Among the other retailers already at the Gateway Center, which opened in 2002, are Home Depot, Target, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Marshalls, Best Buy, Old Navy, Staples, and Bed Bath & Beyond.
