ShopRite, GM Give Hunger Awareness Competition Winners Place on Cheerios Box

ELIZABETH, N.J. -- 60 ShopRite associates have gained a spot on 125,000 limited-edition Cheerios boxes for their stores' commitment to battling hunger in local communities through the ShopRite Partners In Caring program.

The employees were chosen to appear on boxes after the their ShopRites placed among the top 30 stores in a contest held to promote National Hunger Awareness Day and sponsored by ShopRite and Minneapolis-based General Mills.

“This program is a great way for us to get behind our associates and recognize what they do for the community,” noted ShopRite spokeswoman Karen Meleta in a statement.

For the first time, this year’s program also included a “Hunger-Fighting SuperKids” essay contest. Parents, teachers, and community members submitted essays about a child who takes part in local anti-hunger initiatives. The four winners, second-grader Leah Burke of Niantic, Conn,; third-grader Kyra Paillex of Pittstown, N.J.; fourth-grader Connor Bailey of Windsor, Conn.; and seventh-grader Monica Murphy of Spring Lake Heights, N.J., were selected based on their participation such initiatives, the spirit in which the activities were carried out, and the results achieved.

Each SuperKid received 2,500 Box Tops for Education for their school and a $500 donation to their favorite hunger-fighting organization. They will also appear on the limited-edition Cheerios box, the seventh in a series, along with the 60 ShopRite Associates from the tristate area.

ShopRite associates raised over $330,000 during the two-week contest by offering $1 donation cards to customers at checkout, building hunger awareness displays, and holding events in support of cause. General Mills donated an additional $20,000 to the ShopRite Partners In Caring Fund, a component fund of the Community Foundation of New Jersey.

The 2007 limited-edition Cheerios boxes will be on sale Sunday, Oct. 28 at all ShopRite stores.

In other ShopRite Partners In Caring news, tickets are now on sale for the first-ever Taste of the Giants benefit, to be held Nov. 12 at the Giants Stadium Club in the Meadowlands. The event, presented in conjunction with ShopRite and Kraft Foods, will enable New York Giants fans to hobnob with their favorite players; sample dishes by chefs from some of the area’s finest restaurants, including Tao, Scalini Fideli, Tavern on Jane, Tribeca Grill; and take part in live and silent auctions of sports memorabilia, vacation packages, and other items and experiences.
