Shoppers Food & Pharmacy to Battle BOB Shrink with LaneHawk

LANHAM, Md. -- Shoppers Food & Pharmacy here, a division of Minneapolis-based Supervalu, Inc., will deploy Evolution Robotics Retail, Inc.'s LaneHawk Visual Scanner in six stores in the first quarter of 2007 as a way to get a handle on bottom-of-basket (BOB) loss.

"BOB shrink is a problem grocery retailers have tried to combat for years, with pretty limited results," noted Kurt Schertle, Shoppers s.v.p. of merchandising, in a statement. “We have been testing LaneHawk extensively, and are very impressed by the results. LaneHawk is the first product we have found that actually works in reducing BOB loss.”

Employing its patented visual pattern recognition (ViPR) technology, LaneHawk can detect, identify, and present BOB items directly to the point of sale, allowing cashiers to add those items directly to the transaction, according to Evolution Robotics.

“LaneHawk also captures valuable transaction data to help us track what BOB items we are selling, and whether cashiers are actually ringing up BOB items,” notes Shoppers director of loss prevention Mike Mays. “It is an effective tool for both front end operations as well as loss prevention.”

Pasadena, Calif.-based Evolution’s strategic implementation partner in the project is IBM.
