SHOPA Foundation to Honor Kroger for Educational Excellence
DAYTON, Ohio - In recognition of corporate support for a national program to provide students and teachers with school supplies, Kroger Co. and business products wholesale distributor United Stationers Inc. have been named recipients of the 2003 SHOPA Foundation Award for Educational Excellence. The award is presented each year to a company or companies that strongly support the School, Home, & Office Products Association (SHOPA) Foundation's Kids In Need program and other charitable organizations.
Kids In Need Resource Centers provide free school supplies to students and teachers in low-income, under-funded school districts. Kids In Need Teacher Grants provide funds to teachers to conduct innovative classroom projects. The programs are part of the SHOPA Foundation's mission to recognize, promote, and support initiatives that foster educational excellence.
"These companies have been instrumental in the success of Kids In Need, each in its own way," said Scott Walters, executive director of the SHOPA Foundation for Educational Excellence. "United Stationers has donated millions of dollars worth of school supplies and office products to the Kids In Need program during the past two years. The Kroger Co. is involved in Kids In Need Resource Centers and other free stores for teachers in several cities throughout the U.S., and its Fred Meyer division was the first sponsor and continues to sponsor the Kids In Need Teacher Grants program."
United Stationers and the Kroger Co. will be formally presented with the SHOPA Foundation Awards on Nov. 11 at an event being held in conjunction with the 2003 International SHOPA SHOW, Nov.11-13, in Atlanta. The International SHOPA SHOW is sponsored by the School, Home, and Office Products Association (SHOPA), of which both companies being honored are members.
