Shop ‘N Save Joins Diabetes Alliance
Shop ‘n Save Pharmacy is joining UnitedHealth Group’s Diabetes Prevention and Control Alliance, giving the pharmacy’s customers access to the alliance’s innovative, community-based Diabetes Control Program, based on curriculum that has been clinically proven to help control Type 2 diabetes.
Part of Supervalu Inc., Shop ‘n Save Pharmacy is now offering the program at 26 locations in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
Shop ‘n Save Pharmacy will provide patient education and support from trained pharmacists by appointment to help people with diabetes better control their condition and reduce the risk of developing complications such as cardiovascular, kidney and eye disease. In addition, pharmacists in these select Shop ‘n Save Pharmacy locations will conduct blood glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure testing services for program participants and provide them with on-the-spot results, enabling patients to get immediate feedback on their status or progress in managing their diabetes.
“Supervalu is proud to partner with the Diabetes Prevention and Control Alliance to help make an impact on the nation’s diabetes epidemic through equipping and empowering patients to improve their health,” said Chris Dimos, president of Supervalu Pharmacies. “Shop ‘n Save pharmacists are well-positioned to improve our patients’ health due to their accessibility, training and experience in coordinating health care services.”
UnitedHealth Group created the Diabetes Prevention and Control Alliance to help address the growing epidemic of prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes, which threatens to affect more than half of all Americans by 2020 at an annual cost of $500 billion if current trends continue, according to a recent report from the UnitedHealth Center for Health Reform & Modernization.
The Diabetes Control Program provides individuals with diabetes access to trained pharmacists and nurse practitioners who provide personalized coaching and counseling in the convenient setting of a local pharmacy, and help patients improve adherence to their physicians’ treatment plans. Services offered by the Diabetes Prevention and Control Alliance may be contracted by any health insurer or plan sponsor. Currently, DPCA services are available at no additional out-of-pocket cost to participants enrolled in employer-provided health insurance plans through UnitedHealthcare and Medica in select markets.
Shop ‘N Save, a wholly owned subsidiary of Supervalu Inc., has been serving the greater St. Louis, Springfield, Ill. and Jerseyville, Ill., areas since 1979. The company also operates a store in Peoria, Ill.
