Shaw's Switching to Trans-Fat-Free Oil
WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Shaw's Supermarkets Inc. here said yesterday that it has begun changing all the oil it uses in in-store fryers to a zero-trans-fat variety.
The retailer was quoted in the Boston Globe saying that the switch would be completed by this coming Labor Day. Of the 209 Shaw's Supermarkets, all of which operate in New England, 150 have in-store fryers.
"We continue to make the wellness of our customers a top priority," Shaw's president Carl Jablonski noted in a company statement. "We're proactively taking this important step to address concerns about trans fats."
All of the fried foods now sold in the grocer's deli and LaCarte departments will be eventually be made with trans-fat-free oil, according to Shaw's.
Shaw's is a division of Minneapolis-based Supervalu, Inc.
