Shaw's Program Aids New England Nonprofits

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Shaw's Supermarkets here has joined with shoppers to raise money for nonprofit organizations in the New England market, through a new "Receipt Rewards" program.

Nonprofits eligible under Receipt Rewards, which kicked off Feb. 2 and will be an ongoing initiative, include schools, charities, houses of worship, and libraries, the company said.

"It's a simple but needed program that helps so many great causes in New England," said Shaw's president Carl Jablonski in a statement. "We are committed to raising funds for nonprofit organizations in our communities, and Receipt Rewards is an easy way for our customers to get involved as well."

A nonprofit organization can register for the program at the customer service desk at any Shaw's store or Massachusetts Star Market by submitting a completed application, along with a copy of its tax exemption certificate.

The nonprofit can then request friends and supporters to save their Shaw's and Star receipts, which it can collect and send to Shaw's. Four to six weeks later, the nonprofit will receive a check for 1 percent of the eligible register receipt amounts. Ineligible items include lottery tickets, tobacco, postage stamps, money orders, milk, photo processing, tax, and prescriptions, Shaw's said. There's no limit on the number of register receipts a nonprofit may collect.
