Shaw's Conn. Workers Ratify New Contract

In a 300-to-1 vote, Shaw's supermarket employees in Connecticut reportedly voted Sunday to approve a four-year contract that guarantees wage increases and a $500 bonus.

The agreement, which also maintains the workers' health insurance and pension plan, covers 3,000 workers in West Bridgewater, Mass.-based Shaw's stores in Connecticut, according to press reports. Additionally, under the newly ratified contract, full-time workers will receive a raise of $70 a week over the duration of the contract, while part-time workers will get a dollar-an-hour raise.

Negotiations went on until 2.a.m. Sunday. The heavy turnout for the vote was due to its being held on the busiest supermarket day of the week, said Brian A. Petronella, v.p. of Local 371 of the United Food & Commercial Workers.

The Web site of Local 371 UFCW posted a brief congratulatory letter to the associates, signed by Petronella.
