Shaw's to Close Six Stores in Conn., Mass.

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Conn. -- Shaw's Supermarkets is planning to close three stores in New Britain, Southington, and Bridgeport Conn. by the end of October, according to local published reports. Three locations in Massachusetts will also be shut down.

Shaw's spokeswoman Judy Chong told the New Britain Herald that when individual stores fail to meet their goals, they must be closed. She cited a "variety of factors" to explain why the stores in question would have to be shuttered, but said she wouldn't go into specifics, for competitive reasons.

Chong added that the company has been in steady contact with workers and the union to possibly transfer as many employees as possible to other Shaw's stores in the vicinity.

According to Chong, Shaw's will now focus on other areas where it can get the biggest return on its investment. "We continue to make major capital investments in our business," she noted, adding that a new Shaw's location is slated to open in East Hampton, Conn. shortly. Additionally, a store in Darien, Conn. has recently undergone renovations.

Supervalu-owned Shaw's currently operates stores throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
