Sentry Foods Operator to Convert 2 Acquired Jewel Units

WAUKESHA, Wis. - BKT Enterprises, a grocer with three Sentry Foods stores, said it has has purchased two Jewel-Osco locations here and will reopen them as Sentry locations this spring.

BKT Enterprises, which is owned by Bob Fleming and Kurt Rautenberg, acquired the Jewel stores, one at 122 W. Oklahoma Ave. and the other at 925 Hwy. 164 Les Paul Parkway, from Supervalu Inc., which announced in early January that it was exiting the Milwaukee-area market and was "seeking strategic alternatives" for its 15 Jewel-Osco stores.

Taking into account this two-store deal, nine of the Jewel locations have now been claimed by new owners, while six of the Osco Drug portions of the stores were purchased by Aurora Pharmacy, a subsidiary of Milwaukee-based Aurora Health Care.

BKT Enterprises, which operates three Sentry Foods stores in Waukesha and Oconomowoc, Wis., plans to convert the two Jewel stores to the Sentry format in time for grand openings in the spring, according to published reports.

BKT's purchase comes as Jewel-Osco stores are disappearing from the Milwaukee market. Roundy's Inc. earlier this month acquired five Milwaukee-area Jewel-Osco locations, which were reopened as Pick 'n Save stores. Two other locations were acquired by Milwaukee-based Lena's Food Market, which will convert the stores to the Lena's format and also reopen them in the spring.

Jewel-Osco stores that are not acquired by new owners are scheduled to close beginning March 23.
