Schroeder to Head Safeway East

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Twenty-six-year Safeway veteran Karl Schroeder has been named president of the company's 178-store Eastern Division, which includes 44 Genuardi's stores in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey. He succeeds Michael J. Bessire, who held the post since 1996 and has decided to take a break from his 30-year career in the grocery business.

Schroeder started as a courtesy clerk in Arizona, where he later advanced to store manager and district manager. Subsequent district manager assignments took him to Northern California and Hawaii before he returned to the mainland as vice president, retail operations for the Northern California Division. For the past year Schroeder has been on a special assignment at company headquarters in Pleasanton.
"Karl will be an excellent addition to that team. He has consistently delivered solid results while progressing through a variety of challenging line and staff positions," said Safeway president and c.e.o Steven A. Burd."

Safeway is No. 2 on Progressive Grocer's Super 50 list of top U.S. supermarket chains with 1,568 supermarkets posting annual sales of $31.5 billion in 2001.
