Each contestant will prepare a recipe during a 90-minute time period between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The meals will be created according to three categories: appetizer, main entree/side dish, or dessert, and each contestant will receive cooking assistance from their representative store manager. Five groups of 12 children will cook their recipes during the day, and one finalist will be selected per contest category from each of the five groups to prepare their recipes again for the final round and judging.

Event judges include radio and television personalities and newspaper reporters from Bakersfield and Sacramento. They will judge the recipes on the basis of taste, appearance, preparation, and creativity, and use of main ingredients from the list of required products.

One grand prize winner in each category (Appetizer, Main Entree/Side Dish, and Dessert) will be selected to receive a trip to Walt Disney World in Florida for a family of four. Runners up will each receive a Save Mart gift certificate.
