Save Mart to Hold Second Free E-Waste Collection Event

MODESTO, Calif. -- Save Mart Supermarkets here will work with Electronic Recyclers to help consumers to dispose of their electronic waste items for free in the parking lots of six Save Mart locations. It is the second time the two partners are instituting a free recycling program.

Items accepted for disposal include computer monitors, LCD TVs and monitors, laptops, plasma screens, TVs, computer CPUs, telephones, cell phones, printers, PDAs, DVD and VCR players, copy and fax machines, calculators, keyboards, stereo systems, and speakers.

It is illegal to simply throw an unwanted television or computer monitor in the trash in the state of California; the state says electronic items have toxic elements in them that are environmentally hazardous. By state law, such products must be recycled properly and in ways that won't harm the environment. Electronic products also contain valuable resources such as metal, plastic and glass, which can be recycled.

Last July, Save Mart became the first supermarket chain in California to serve as a collector of electronic waste, when six of its stores across Northern and Central California collected nearly 250,000 pounds of electronic waste.
