Sara Lee Deli Launches Anti-hunger Twitter Campaign on Nat’l Sandwich Day

Sara Lee Deli is marking National Sandwich Day today with an initiative that aims to contribute the equivalent of 16,500 sandwiches to anti-hunger organization Share Our Strength. During the 24-hour “Deli Difference” Twitter campaign, which began at this morning at midnight Pacific Time, the Downers Grove, Ill.-based company will contribute $1 for each follower of @SaraLeeDeli on Twitter, up to $25,000.

“National Sandwich Day is a terrific opportunity for us to make a difference and help a hungry child in need,” noted Jonathan Drake, VP, Sara Lee Deli. “We are giving our consumers a simple way to participate in the program and join Sara Lee Deli in the fight against hunger.”

To get the word out among the Twitter community, the brand is using #sldeli and #delidifference hash tags. The campaign urges followers to “re-tweet” (or re-post) campaign messages to boost awareness about the initiative to help vanquish childhood hunger.

“Share Our Strength is committed to ending childhood hunger in America by 2015,” said Chuck Scofield, chief development officer of the Washington-based organization

Additionally, Sara Lee Deli is featuring on its Facebook fan page discussions, polls and various interactive tools for fans to take part in, along with conversations on the charitable cause. Fans and visitors to the page will also be able to “celebrate the sandwich” by learning the seven chef-approved steps to making an award-winning creation, as well as finding out tips and fun facts relating to National Sandwich Day.

Once followers are connected with @SaraLeeDeli on Twitter, they’ll be able to access sandwich recipes, kitchen tips and coupon offers year-round.

“Sandwiches are the No. 1 lunch and dinner entrée, and Sara Lee Fresh Ideas pre-sliced deli meats are a delicious way to build a sandwich,” said Drake. “Coming together with our consumers, our product and Share Our Strength is a great way to celebrate National Sandwich Day and make a difference.”

Combining deli-quality thin-sliced meats with convenient resealable tub packaging, the Fresh Ideas product line is available in 14 varieties of turkey, ham, chicken and beef in the self-serve deli section. The suggested retail price ranges from $4.99 to $5.99.

National Sandwich Day commemorates the birthday of the fourth Earl of Sandwich, an 18th-century English nobleman who is said to have invented the sandwich.
