Sam’s Club Offering Free Kids’ Health Screenings

Timed to take place as kids prepare to return to school, Sam’s Club will host free children’s health screenings on Saturday, Aug. 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at all locations with a pharmacy. As well as no-charge DNA and fingerprint kits available at the pharmacy, the Bentonville, Ark.-based warehouse club chain will distribute “Sesame Street” “Healthy Teeth, Healthy Me” outreach kits that help children to make better oral health choices.

Additionally, body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure tests for children and adults (limited to the first 50 participants at each club) and vision screenings will be provided free while supplies last:

“Reinforcing healthy habits for children is an important part of back-to-school planning,” said Jill Turner-Mitchael, SVP, Sam’s Club Health and Wellness, of the second annual event. “We have provided 1.4 million free health screenings in the past year and a half, and we remain committed to providing quality health solutions for the entire family.”

The English/Spanish “Healthy Teeth, Healthy Me” kit, developed by Sesame Workshop and funded in part by the Sam’s Club Giving Program and MetLife Foundation, includes an original “Sesame Street” DVD and a family booklet. Among the additional resources available online are public service messages, a community health providers’ guide, an interactive game and a downloadable song to encourage kids to brush. The DVD features the “Sesame Street” Muppets with new songs, animated segments and celebrity guests Bruno Mars, David Hyde Pierce, Nicole Kidman, Amy Ryan, Wendy Williams, Jay Sean, Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber.

Sam’s Club’s free health screenings scheduled for Sept. 8 will focus on diabetes management. For more information on children’s health, parents can read the July/August issue of the chain’s exclusive bimonthly wellness magazine, Healthy Living Made Simple, which reaches about 8 million members.

Sam’s Club, a division of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., serves more than 47 million members in clubs across the United States, as well as in Brazil, China and Mexico.
