Safeway's New Gift Card Program Brings the Mall to the Supermarket

SAN FRANCISCO - Safeway is launching a new gift card program that brings the shopping mall to the grocery store checkout line for busy holiday shoppers. The program makes gift cards available from a variety of retailers, including Nordstrom, Starbucks, Sears, Blockbuster, Borders Books and Music, KB Toys, Payless ShoeSource, The Children's Place, Marriott Hotels, Foot Locker, and Wherehouse Music.

Gift cards now account for approximately $30 billion spent of annual gift spending and are also one of the most commonly requested gifts, according to Safeway. A survey by the National Retail Federation finds that gift cards rank among the top 10 most wanted gifts.

Safeway's gift cards are sold in a range of values from $10 to $200 with no additional service or activation fees or costs. Gift cards are activated upon purchase and can be used the same day. The cards will be located at the checkout line, in the greeting card aisle, and at kiosk racks at all Safeway retail stores nationwide, including Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Randalls, Dominick's, Genuardi's, Carrs, Pak 'n Save Foods and Tom Thumb.
