Safeway's Marketing Excellence Wins POPAI's Praise

For its "demonstrated excellence in marketing," Safeway Inc. yesterday won the 2008 Retail Chief Award for Merchandising Excellence from POPAI, The Global Association for Marketing at-Retail.

The award recognizes companies that demonstrate effective and innovative use of marketing at-retail in their overall marketing strategy, and adhere to the highest business standards, according to POPAI.

"Safeway was chosen because of the fairness they practice when working with producers in the industry," said Tom Ujfalussy, chairman of the nominating committee, and director of new concept marketing for The Central Group.

Greg Teneyck, Safeway's director public affairs/government relations, will accept the award during the Night of Honors at the annual Industry Leadership Conference in Philadelphia next month. Past Chief Award winners include: BP Oil Corporation, General Motors, McDonald's Corporation, and Walgreens Company.

POPAI is a non-profit association serving the global marketing at-retail industry.
