Safeway.com to Launch in Bay Area Next Week
PLEASANTON, Calif. - Safeway has announced it will have an online grocery operation in three parts of the Bay Area by next week, the Contra Costa Times newspaper reports.
Safeway began delivering groceries ordered over the Internet to the San Jose area on Monday. It will roll out service to 14 San Francisco zip codes this coming Monday. And the company confirmed it has been delivering to most parts of the Tri-Valley area for weeks, according to the Times.
"We anticipate in the next few weeks to roll out Safeway.com to the vast majority of the Bay Area," Safeway spokesman David Bowlby said Monday.
Once a major online grocery testing ground, the Bay Area has not had this type of widespread service by a large grocer since Foster City-based Webvan shut down in July.
A spokeswoman for competitor Albertson's, which announced on Monday it has rolled out online service in the Portland, Ore., area, told the newspaper it likely will offer the service in the Bay Area in the future.
