Safeway Unit in Dublin, Calif. First to Run Fully on Solar Power
PLEASANTON, Calif. -- Safeway Inc. today will unveil a newly-installed acre-wide rooftop solar array that will power a 55,000-square-foot store in Dublin, Calif., which the chains said is the first grocery store to be so configured.
The solar power unit is part of larger "green power" initiative at Safeway, based here. The store's gas station is already powered by wind energy. Safeway said solar and wind energy are part a company-wide focus reduce carbon power demand that also includes investment in energy-efficient refrigeration and lighting, and a massive recycling program for paper, cardboard, and plastic.
Safeway said it is committed to reducing its carbon footprint from the base year 2000 by 390,000 tons. Additionally, each year Safeway recycles enough paper, cardboard, plastic and other materials to fill a football field 190 feet high, according to the retailer.
