Safeway Taps Former Wal-Mart V.P. for New Audit Position

PLEASANTON, Calif. -- Safeway, Inc. here said yesterday it named John A. Lewis as s.v.p., internal audit, a new position. He will have overall responsibility for the company's internal audit function, reporting to e.v.p. and c.f.o. Robert Edwards.

Lewis joins Safeway from Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., where he was s.v.p. and c.f.o. of Wal-Mart International since 2003, and prior to that served as v.p. and chief audit executive at Wal-Mart since 1996.

"John's extensive retail and audit experience will be a great asset to Safeway in the years to come," said Steve Burd, chairman, president, and c.e.o., in a statement. "We are pleased to be able to attract someone of his caliber to lead our audit function."

Before joining Wal-Mart, Lewis spent 25 years as an auditor with Mercantile Stores Company, Inc. and becoming the company's director of internal audit. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a BBA in accounting, and earned his CPA in Colorado and Ohio. He is also a Certified Internal Auditor.
