Safeway Settles BOGO Lawsuit

PLEASANTON, Calif. -- Safeway Inc. here has agreed to pay $2 million to three California counties to settle a suit over the chain's "buy one, get one free" promotions, according to San Francisco television station KPIX.

The settlement comes after a shopper complained that customers were sometimes shortchanged on the advertised deals. An investigation found that the checkout registers sometimes rang up the specials incorrectly, or did not subtract the full price for the second item.

Marin, Sonoma, and Shasta counties brought the lawsuit, but the settlement affects Safeway's advertising statewide. Safeway agreed to the settlement without admitting any wrongdoing.
