Safeway Raises Funds for Prostate Cancer Campaign

LANHAM, Md. - For the third consecutive year, Safeway is conducting a nationwide, in-store fundraising and awareness campaign to fight prostate cancer throughout the month of June. The effort benefits CaP CURE, a national, non-profit public charity dedicated to finding cures and controls for prostate cancer.

The Safeway fundraising activities revolve around the June designation as "men's health awareness" month.

Safeway customers have the opportunity to support the cause by designating a $1 donation to CaP CURE at the checkstands at all stores. In its Eastern Division, retail employees are calling customers' attention to the campaign by wearing white t-shirts they purchased for $12 that can be worn throughout the campaign.

Customers can also purchase blue ceramic ribbon pins each that have come to symbolize the fight to cure prostate cancer for $3.50. All monies collected from checkstand donations, t-shirt and pin purchases will be contributed to the campaign.

"Our goal locally is to collect $400,000 with a nationwide goal of $2 million," said Karl Schroeder, eastern division president. "We hope our efforts are not only successful in raising money to help find a cure but by raising awareness in men about the importance of preventative healthcare and early detection."

One in every six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer within his lifetime, making it the most common occurring non-skin cancer in America. An estimated 29,000 lives will be lost to prostate cancer in 2003, second only to the leading cause of cancer death in men -- lung cancer.
