Safeway Promotes Everette to Corporate VP

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Safeway Inc. announced today the promotion of Bruce Everette to corporate executive vice president. Everette will have corporate responsibility for executing a range of business strategies and initiatives across Safeway's 10 retail divisions.

Everette was most recently president of Safeway's Northern California Division. He started with Safeway in 1968 in the company's former Richmond Division, and later served as a district manager in Oklahoma and Virginia before moving to Phoenix as retail operations manager in 1991. He became division manager in Arizona four years later and assumed those responsibilities in Northern California in 1998.

"Bruce is a master at getting things done in a retail environment," said Safeway Chairman, president and CEO Steve Burd. "In his new capacity, he will work closely with our retail division presidents to strengthen their already considerable ability to execute a range of ongoing and new strategies developed by our corporate retail and marketing teams."

Frank Calfas will succeed Everette as Northern California division president. Calfas was promoted to vice president of retail operations at Vons in Southern California following Safeway's acquisition of that company in 1997.

Other executive staff changes that were announced:
* Bob Henry will retire as Denver Division President after a distinguished 41-year career with Safeway.
* Tim Hakin, currently president of Dominick's, Safeway's subsidiary in the metro Chicago area, will replace Henry in the Denver Division.
* Scott Grimmett, currently vice president, retail operations at Dominick's has succeeded Hakin as president of the operation.
