Safeway Hires SVP, Human Resources

PLEASANTON, Calif. -- Safeway Inc. yesterday hired Russell M. Jackson as s.v.p., human resources, effective April 1, 2007. He will succeed Dick W. Gonzales, who retired at the end of 2006.

Jackson comes to Safeway from PG&E Corporation, where he most recently served as s.v.p., human resources, overseeing all aspects of employee relations, compensation, benefits, recruiting, leadership development, and labor relations.

During his 27-year tenure with PG&E, Jackson held both line and staff positions in the areas of operations, marketing, and general management. In his latest role, he had been in the forefront of transformation efforts to refocus the utility's strategic vision and improve its operational efficiency, said Safeway.

He introduced a leadership academy, workshops, and other development programs to support cultural change and enhance executive decision making; implemented a new performance management program and compensation system to better align employee performance with business objectives; and directed a strategic planning effort to realign the human resources function to focus on planning and employee development.

Safeway Inc. operates 1,761 stores in the U.S. and Canada and had annual sales of $40.2 billion in 2006.
