Safeway Foundation Awards $153,000 in Grants to 138 Schools, Charities

DENVER -- The Safeway Foundation has awarded more than $153,000 in grants to 138 schools and local charities in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Wyoming to support a wide range of neighborhood programs and activities.

The funds represent contributions made to the foundation during 2004 by employees of Safeway's Denver Division, matched by an equal amount from its Pleasanton, Calif.-based corporate parent. Schools and charities were recommended for funding by staff members at local Safeway stores.

"During 2004, our store employees generously contributed more than $75,000 to help make an impact in their communities through a host of non-profit organizations, and we're extremely grateful for their contributions," said Scott Grimmett, president of Safeway's Denver Division, in a statement.

"We're pleased not only to match their contributions, but to recognize and support so many important programs and activities with which our employees are involved in the neighborhoods and communities we serve," Grimmett added.

Individual donations include those to local schools, youth groups, service clubs, law enforcement and fire protection activities, health promotion and medical care programs, self-help and support groups, shelter and abuse programs, neighborhood organizations, food banks, and human service agencies and initiatives.

Safeway operates 1,802 stores in the United States and Canada and had annual sales of $35.8 billion in 2004.
