Safeway Eastern Division Fight Prostate Cancer on Several Fronts

LANHAM, Md. -- Safeway is gearing up to run its fifth annual nationwide, in-store fundraising and awareness campaign to battle prostate cancer throughout the month of June, and the retailer's Eastern Division, based here, has some particularly ambitious plans in mind.

Safeway customers at the 178 stores in the mid-Atlantic region will be able to support the cause in one of three ways: by making a $1 donation at checkout, buying a World's Famous Chocolate bar for $1, or purchasing a light-blue prostate cancer awareness wristband for $2. Additionally, retail employees are helping raise funds by buying campaign t-shirts for $12 (including a $6 donation).

The Safeway campaign will benefit the National Prostate Cancer Foundation, a national, nonprofit public charity. The Pleasanton, Calif.-based company raised more than $3.4 million last year overall, with the Eastern Division donating about $303,000 to prostate cancer research organizations.

"After having our most successful prostate cancer fundraiser ever, I certainly think Eastern can collect $400,000 toward the overall goal of $4 million," said interim Eastern Division president Hank Cominiello. "We hope our efforts are not only successful in raising money to help find a cure, but in also raising awareness in men about the importance of preventative health care and early detection."

Safeway operates approximately 1,800 stores in the United States and Canada, with a total work force of almost 200,000 employees. The Eastern Division currently employs more than 16,000 people and operates 178 stores, including 38 Genuardi's Markets in Southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, along with 77 Safeway stores in Maryland, 42 in Virginia, 16 in the District of Columbia, and four in Delaware.
