Safeway to Distribute Coupon Books in Stores

TROY, Mich. - Safeway Inc. is teaming with coupon book marketer Entertainment Publications, based in Troy, Mich., in what Entertainment calls its first major marketing alliance within the grocery industry.

Through the partnership, Safeway will distribute the 2003 Entertainment book at more than 1,400 Safeway, Dominick's, Pak 'n Save, Vons, Carrs, Pavilions, Tom Thumb, Randalls, and Genuardi's stores. A portion of the proceeds from each book sold will be donated to 10 local schools and charities in each market that Safeway serves.

Published in more than 160 North American markets, each Entertainment book contains thousands of dollars in "2-for-1" and 50 percent-off coupons and discount offers from local and national restaurants, hotels, entertainment venues and other merchants. Approximately 8 million Entertainment books are sold annually, according to the company. In addition, sales from Entertainment Publications' products raise more than $90 million annually for special causes for schools, community groups and other non-profit organizations.

"Partnering with Safeway provides consumers another convenient way to purchase the Entertainment book, while still benefiting the great charities and causes in their communities," said Yosi Heber, Entertainment's chief marketing officer. "Our marketing research indicates that, of the more than eight million consumers who buy our product, a majority have a very strong desire to repurchase the Entertainment membership each year. In addition, many others want to buy it, but aren't sure where to find it. Having our product on the shelves of high-traffic, high-profile Safeway locations provides us a tremendous opportunity to offer 50 percent-off and '2-for-1' savings to a large consumer audience."

The 2003 Entertainment book will be available through Safeway (and stores listed above) through Nov. 23.
