Safeway to Discontinue PowerPump Rewards – But Not Because of Excentus

Fuel rewards solutions provider Excentus yesterday said that Safeway will discontinue its PowerPump fuel rewards program following a legal challenge filed by Excentus this past June, but according to the grocer, the lawsuit has nothing to do with the program’s termination.

“The Excentus suit has nothing to do with our any decision we have made on Power Pump,” Safeway spokesperson Brian Dowling told Progressive Grocer. “We launched PowerPump a year ago when gas prices peaked. The promotion expires on September 12th. We will continue to offer competitive fuel prices. However, customers are asking us to provide greater overall value inside the store and we are responding accordingly.”

Indeed, Safeway announced on its blog that its PowerPump fuel discounts expire September 12 (http://community.safeway.com/t5/The-Safeway-Blog/Power-Pump-Rewards-Expiration-9-12-09/ba-p/862#A862), and that “in an effort to provide even more value inside of our stores there will be some changes to the ongoing program effective September 13th.”
