Russ’s to Host Julia Child Look- and Sound-Alike Contest

Inspired perhaps by the wave of publicity surrounding the recent release of the film “Julie and Julia,” and the subsequent resurgence of interest in culinary icon Julia Child’s cookbooks and TV shows, B&R Stores, Inc.’s Russ’s Market location at 17th and Washington in Lincoln, Neb., is enlisting customers to pay homage to Child’s influence on American culture in an entirely different way, with a Julia Child look- and sound-alike contest.

Set to get underway this Saturday at 11 a.m., the contest will award prizes to winners in each of the following four categories: Best Female; Best Male; Best Child 13-18; Best Child 12 and under. Winners will be selected based on their costumea and the ability to imitate Child’s distinctive vocal style.

“I think this Julia Child contest is going to be a lot of fun,” said Pat Raybould, president of B&R Stores. “It’s a funky concept that fits right in with the strong sense of community you get when you visit the 17th and Washington Russ’s Market. I’m hoping to see some awesome costumes and vocal imitations, but no matter what, we’re just going to have a lot of fun.”

Raybould said that the store is also planning to host cooking demonstrations during the event.

The employee-owned B&R Stores was founded in 1962 by Russ Raybould. During the past 46 years, the company has grown to include four store concepts (Russ’s Market, Super Saver, ALPS and Grand Central Apple Market) located in seven cities across Nebraska and Iowa.
