Rouses to Take Over Winn-Dixie Store; MOM’s Opening 2nd Va. Location

Rouses Markets has acquired the Winn-Dixie supermarket space in the Sugarland Shopping Center in Matthews, La., with plans to convert the 31,500-square-foot site to a Rouses by late August, while another food retailer, MOM’s Organic Market, is also expanding with a store in the newly developed Mosaic District of Merrifield/Falls Church, Va.

The Thibodaux, La.-based independent grocer will begin the renovation after Winn-Dixie closes the store in July. “We’re going to paint it, change out the fixtures, and most importantly, stock it from top to bottom with all of the great local products Louisiana is famous for, including fresh local produce and our own Cajun specialties,” said owner Donald Rouse, adding that he hoped the store’s current associates would apply to join his family’s company, which currently employs 5,200 people.

The Mathews location will be Rouses’ 36th market, as well as its seventh in Lafourche Parish. The company also has a ground-up store under construction in Lockport, La., and is working on a new Lafayette, La., location, both slated to open in summer 2011.

The MOM’s location, meanwhile, is scheduled to open in spring 2012, at the intersection of Lee Highway and Gallows Road. The Mosaic District is a LEED pilot project developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. Site sustainability, a 20,000-square-foot green roof, water efficiency and indoor environmental quality are some of the aspects that must be taken into account during construction.

“With five stores in Maryland and only one in Virginia, this store is overdue for us,” Scott Nash, founder and CEO of Rockville, Md.-based MOM’s. “We picked Merrifield for its easy accessibility to so many [northern Virginia] communities. This lease signing also signifies a new phase of increased growth for MOM’s. The company plans to open five to six additional stores by the end of 2012.”

In addition to 100 percent organic produce, the new store will carry a large variety of organic and unique grocery and dairy items, bulk foods, gourmet cheeses, local and organic meats, sustainable seafood, gluten-free foods, supplements and body care products, environmentally friendly household goods, and holistic pet products.

MOM’s currently operates stores in Rockville, College Park, Columbia East, Frederick and Bowie, Md., and Alexandria, Va.
