Reusable Canvas Bag Sales More Than Double at Fresh & Easy
Sales of reusable canvas bags at Tesco-owned Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market have more than doubled since the grocer introduced them this past October, in an effort to reduce the number of plastic single-use bags it gives away to customers.
"We want to make it easier for our customers to make green purchasing decisions," said Simon Uwins, Fresh & Easy's c.m.o. "By offering affordable canvas bag options we can encourage customers to reach for a reusable bag instead of one that might end up in a landfill."
The 99-cent bag is made from 100 percent unbleached cotton and can hold up to 100 pounds, according to the grocer.
Fresh & Easy gives away the bags to customers at store grand openings, and one-year anniversary celebrations. The retailer said it has given away over 175,000 canvas bags since opening its first store in November 2007.
In addition to the canvas grocery bag, Fresh & Easy sells a canvas wine carrier bag for $1.99 that holds up to seven bottles; and a 20-cent reusable plastic bag that will be replaced for free if it is ever torn or damaged. The company said it also plans to introduce an organic canvas shopping bag for $2.99 in mid-December.
